VDA communications process: HABBL automatically announces vehicles
Daimler’s Logistics and IT units as well as Inform and HABBL have implemented an automatic communications process based on VDA Recommendations 4945 and 4996 to support high-precision logistics scheduling at Mercedes-Benz lorry plants. HABBL announces a lorry’s arrival independently.
Mercedes-Benz lorry plants need precise ETAs (estimated times of arrival) of delivering lorries in order to properly prepare their logistics and production capacities. To make this communication both as precise as possible and painless for lorry drivers, the project partners worked with the plant logistics team at the Wörth plant to develop a process based on VDA Recommendations 4945 and 4996. Drivers just have to send an initial message confirming the trip – no other driver actions are needed.
Status updates every 15 minutes
As soon as the departure has been confirmed, HABBL automatically sends both an ETA and the vehicle’s current position to the Logistics Control team at the plant every 15 minutes. This lets Logistics Control know when a particular delivery is arriving, allowing them to prepare perfectly for unloading. Drivers save even more time when they arrive at the plant: They do not have to sign in but can use a barcode, which appears in the HABBL app, to authenticate themselves at the gate. Once they enter the plant, a map in the HABBL app guides them to their unloading dock. This greatly reduces turnaround times at the plant, allowing carriers to proceed to their next trip sooner. This process is being rolled out to all Mercedes-Benz lorry plants.
